For many the thought of sales training can conjure images of learning hypnotic mind manipulation techniques. Many believe that the ‘skill’ of selling is thought be the preserve of a certain thick skinned, extraverted type, who’s primary desire is to gather for ever greater sums of money. In reality however selling and growing your business need not be like this at all. Without realising it we are all permanently engaging in Sales activities; when we are talking to our partners and children, let alone when we are talking to our clients. This half day workshop will equip you with the tools and techniques of meaningful and effective communication with your clients, with the aim of forging new and valuable business relationships that can be retained in the long term. The session will involve an element of group activities that will be sure to be both enjoyable and informative and will provide you with a tool to allow you to both engage with your clients and to ensure that after a lengthy business meeting you will come away better informed and able to ascertain what the next best step is both for the progression of your own firm and to secure the sale.

We’ve organised a bicycle maintenance workshop here at the Exchange on Saturday 18th December from 10 am to 1 pm with the Birmingham Bike Foundry, a not-for-profit worker co-operative based in Digbeth www.birminghambikefoundry.org.  It will include a session on basic maintenance skills like how to check your bike is safe, adjust brakes and index gears, as well as the opportunity to have your own bike checked over by an expert mechanic. Here’s what Nancy from the Bike Foundry says:

‘Repairs wise, we will be able to make adjustments to brakes (although not hydraulic brakes – we will refer people to On Your Bike for this) and gears, oil chains, adjust saddles, handlebars and other general service repairs. If bikes have serious faults or need new parts we will diagnose problems and make recommendations. The price includes cables, ferrels and crimps; we will bring along brake blocks, bar tape, inner tubes and a few other commonly needed parts and sell them at 10% off and install them if required.’

We went down to see the Bike Foundry people recently and they are lovely friendly people who just love bikes! As well as doing repairs they take on donated bikes and fix them up with the aim of making better quality affordable bikes available to the community, and saving bikes from landfills.

The workshop is open to everyone – you don’t need to be an Exchange member. The cost is £10 and you need to pay this in full by cash or cheque via Moseley Exchange reception to secure your place – contact details here. There are only 12 places and at such fantastic value we’re sure they’ll go fast – make sure you book early!

Nancy and Charlotte at the Bike Foundry workshop

The Moseley Cut Film Competition is calling for entries from “anyone and everyone living in Birmingham” who fancies having a go at producing a short film. There are no age restrictions or pre-requisite of experience; in fact entries are welcome even more if you have never attempted to make a film before!

The films will be shown as an installation at the Art Trail during this year’s Moseley Festival. The Art Trail debuted for the first time last year, and was such a success that it will bigger and better this year.

The winning films will be shown on repeat here at the Moseley Exchange from 12pm to 5pm on the following dates:

• Saturday 10^th July
• Sunday 11^th July
• Saturday 17^th July
• Sunday 18^th July

There will also be a launch party and “Premier” for the winners and artists featured on the trail on Friday July 9^th between 6–8pm here at the Moseley Exchange.

“There has been a lot going on with regard to digital inclusion and civic engagement. I keep seeing reports of research that I really should read for work, but just don’t have the time to; and even if I did, many of them are pretty impenetrable.

This series of three pilot events is a chance for us to pool our knowledge of that research. Each week one person will have read one report. They will present the key points for the rest of us to then discuss.”
