A new series of discussions on topical issues…To kick off our series of discussions, we have invited freelancers talk about their experience and knowledge of working in the Creative Industry. They each have a diverse background of experience in the industry. They will be discussing some of their latest projects. These series of talks will be of interest to anyone working in the creative industries and related areas. After a short introduction to their work on the subject, we hope to encourage a general discussion including other people’s experiences and knowledge of Industries.

1. Film Industries – Deborah Aston (24th April 2012 )

Delving into her background and experiences of working in all departments of the Film Industry Deborah hopes to inspire others and share her experience of working as a technician in television production, shooting, editing and directing both single and multi cameras. Live gallery operation and TX directing, studio and location productions, live and per-recorded are all topics up for discussion. Deborah has been involved in independent film having delivered a slate of award winning shorts that have been screened at numerous festivals.

2. Music Industries – Jez Collins (22nd May 2012)

Jez has worked in Birmingham’s music industry for over 20 years now. He also teaches music enterprise within the School of Media. He has also been involved in a number of projects at Interactive Cultures. Current projects he is working on include a Culture and Heritage project, ‘Birmingham Popular Music Archive’. The project aims to create an online archive celebrating the achievements of music practitioners from Birmingham and the impact they have had on the local, national and global music industry. Jez has also worked in both private and public sectors with focus on Creative Industries. This session will be chaired by Mark Scourse.

3. Design Industries – Andy Hartwell (26th June 2012)

Andy studied BSC Hons in Multimedia Technology and MA in Media Enterprise at Birmingham City University. All these studies tie him and forced me to cover important issues. His final project was based on e marketing and involved the exploration and analysis of techniques that could be used to help effectively promote my own and clients’ businesses online. Andy is manager director of Substrakt, a digital media and design agency; creating online and visual campaigns that help our clients cultivate bigger, better brands.. Substrakt Ltd was formed in August 2006, in which time we have gained clients including: BBC, Channel 4, Microsoft, DTZ, Cushman & Wakefield, Selfridges, BCU and Birmingham City Council.

4. Art Industries – Alex Lockett (24th July 2012)

Alex Lockett studied Fine Art and Philosophy at the university of Reading between 2001 and 2005, immediately following her BA she studied MA Curating at Goldsmiths College, University of London. After completing her MA she did two internships, a four month placement at Witte de With Center of Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and as an artist’s assistant for art collective N55, spending four months in Denmark. On return to the UK Alex worked as a part time curatorial assistant for off-site projects at Aspex gallery in Portsmouth and on freelance projects including setting up and running a gorilla gardening group for children at The Gardening Museum in London. Alex then became the programme assistant at Ikon gallery in Birmingham where she worked for three years. During her time at Ikon she helped set up Grand Union project space where she curated exhibitions over a two year period and set up Project Pigeon. In April 2011 Alex decided to leave her full time job at Ikon in order to focus on Project Pigeon. Alex will be talking about her experiences of running Project Pigeon.

All discussions will be held from 7.00pm – 9.00pm in the Co-working space.

Opening, Tuesday, 28th February, 19:00-21:00

Exhibition, 28th of February until 30th of April

Dan and Jude introduce us to their photographic work of urban landscapes. They have found their own way to capture the public spaces in an intimate and personal perspective. They are looking for the human and mystical side of the city.

Dan takes photographs in documentary contexts for numerous purposes. Apart from beauty, formalism and balance, he is interested in photography as part of the process of culture. His focus on the photography capability for education, change, language- transcendence, commerce, punch-lines… In this exhibition he shows his photographs of the Middle East when he was working in collaboration with the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Science at Birmingham University.

In Jude’s photographs we see a juxtaposition of texture and colour. Her work is designed to grow and decay with the landscape or to be used as an accent to the space. She grew up and lived in large and diverse cities all her life. In those cities, derelict buildings and overgrown urban landscapes were a familiar sight. The graffiti, that can often be found in these areas, is usually in stark contrast to the natural growth and decay. For this exhibition Jude uses photographs to represent shapes and identify areas of interest that can live both outdoors and indoors.

by Lauren Davies (Red Lantern Project Management Ltd)

I recently asked a selection of professionals that I know, from different industries, what is the one item, essential to their business, that they might recommend to those at the very earliest stage of their freelance career or those thinking of starting up in business.

Whether it be a business card, website, smart phone, twitter account or something more abstract I wanted to know the one item they would pick overall.

Below are their responses, which I have categorised into 5 areas:

People

• a mentor or critical friend – someone not personally related to you or your business that can advise you and offer help, support and encouragement.

• The best thing you have is YOU – no other things are really essential unless you have made contacts / got out and spoken to people / networked / told people what you are doing. People like people. The other ‘tools’ are just add-ons. We get most of our good contracts because the people have met us and know who we are.

• An address book. Not a literal one, but the more people you know who can recommend you for work, the better. Get out there and get networking!

• My advice would be that your networks – formal and informal are one of your best assets. Develop relationships, nurture existing and new contacts, actively involve yourself in online and offline networks.

• a network of contacts is the most important thing to start a business

• A network. For support, collaboration, ideas, leads.

Physical items / getting organised and connected

• A business card

• Brompton fold up bike for getting to meetings and work through the city streets

• Access to a computer of some sort

• If I had to suggest something physical I’d be lost without my smart phone, it has everything, phone, internet, diary, alarm, satnav and now even talks back to me thanks to Suri!

• A laptop with wifi. You can work anywhere and take everything with you when you meet people to tell them about your business.

• Business bank account – keep financial matters separate as much as possible

Online presence

• A domain name with even just a holding page, and an email address

• a Face Book page

• A tool or platform for starting a conversation and building relationships – such as a blog/or regular event

• A blog – related to what you do professionally and your skills. A good platform to “show off” your skills and talents, the “collaborative nature” of it (i.e. asking other people for blog posts) means that you can build work focussed relationships outside of the confines of your day job, and learn loads of stuff, from what people actually post on there. An example of the interesting opportunities this has led to: being approached by a university academic to be featured (albeit briefly) in an academic publication. Whilst also being approached by other cultural orgs (non-profit and profit) for advice on using digital media.

• A website – absolutely. Doesn’t have to be anything snazzy, a WordPress site would be fine, the content is more important.

• If I had to choose something then maybe some kind of ‘intelligent’ web presence so that people can ‘find’ you! (Not just a Twitter account that tells people what you had for dinner!).

Self-belief, determination & confidence

• Believe in Yourself

• Everyone will tell you that your idea is impossible and cannot happen, believe in yourself and find a way to do it! Talent attracts talent so as you move forward you will meet fantastic people who will bring a new perspective to the project!

• The ability to say ‘hello’ in a room full of strangers.

• There’s also that notion that if you can talk to one person, you can talk to two hundred – and once you’ve ‘broken the back’ as it were, you can work up to speaking confidently in front of large groups of people in addition those essential one-to-one conversations. Useful once the work load increases!

Ideas

• A notebook full of ideas

• An ideas board – virtual or physical but somewhere to manifest and make visible your ideas – once they are somewhere they can be developed.

• My recommended essential isn’t a thing like a business card or website, it’s actually: a good business idea. Can you say what your business is succinctly? – is it a product or a service or both. Why is it a good business idea and is there a demand for it- if not can you create the demand. Easy!!

Let us know in the comments below if you would like to add any further recommendations and also if you have any experiences to share of how these items work alongside your business activities.
