3 Of A Kind – Art Exhibition by Mark Highton

26th November to 17th December

Mark Highton
3 Of A Kind

This current series of paintings titled ‘ 3 of a kind’ originated from a book in my collection of what the Americans call ‘slot machines’. The interest is nostalgic, looking back, leisure and youth. The slot theme has been used by artists in the past, If you look at both American and English Pop Artists e.g Peter Phillip and Peter Blake you will find examples of this type of imagery. I have recycled some of their ideas in my own paintings.
My objective is to try and create the allure, glamour and temptation of the slot machine.

The series began with very small sketches which then developed into A4 sketches in acrylic on paper and finally works in oil on board. Some of the boards in this exhibition have been separated rearranged and reassembled.

As an artist
You can have a aims, however constraints of time, resources and environment can limit those objectives. At this time I am scanning my work and producing combinations of images that the audience can pick & mix.

I live in the Warley area of Birmingham and work for South and City College Birmingham as a lecturer at the Bournville campus. I teach adults with learning difficulties.
